In The Legacy by Virginia Woolf we have the theme of ego, jealousy, independence, identity, gender roles, equality, awareness and change. Taken from her The Complete Shorter Fiction collection the story is narrated in the third person by an unnamed narrator and after reading the story the reader realises that Woolf may be exploring the theme of ego. Throughout the story Gilbert seems to be more focused on himself than he is on others, something that is noticeable when he is reading Angela’s diaries. When he comes across incidents in the diaries in which he is mentioned he pauses to reflect on his own memory of what may have happened and has an ability to remember how he felt at the time and what he was doing. However it is also noticeable that he rarely recalls how anybody else may have felt or what they may have been doing. This may be significant as it suggests that the most important person in Gilbert’s life or the individual that Gilbert is most focused on is himself. How self-centered Gilbert may be is further explored when Gilbert assumes that Sissy’s offer of assistance, should he need it, is driven by her being enamored with him. Again this would suggest that Gilbert lacks the ability to exclude his own vanity (or ego) from a situation. Something that becomes clearer to the reader when Gilbert looks at himself in the mirror after Sissy has left the house and we discover that he considers himself to be a ‘very distinguished-looking man.’ It may also be important that while Gilbert is reading Angela’s diaries, as soon as his name no longer appears, Woolf tells the reader that Gilbert’s ‘interest slackened.’ Again this would suggest that Gilbert may be self-centered with very little real interest in others.
It also becomes obvious to the reader that Gilbert is jealous of B.M. and as the story progresses it becomes clear that Gilbert feels threatened by him and the relationship that B.M. had with Angela. This may be important as both Gilbert and B.M. are two very different types of characters. Gilbert as a Member of Parliament (and upper class) seems to view himself as being better than others and as the reader is already aware, lacks any ability to be able to think of how others may live their lives. While B.M. on the other hand appears to be cut from a different type of cloth. Not only is he a socialist who believes in the inevitability of a social revolution but the reader is also aware of the difficulties B.M. incurred when growing up. By having two very different types of male characters in the story Woolf may be suggesting that at the time the story was written there were some who believed in changing the order of the world around them with B.M., through his socialist views, being one of these people. While on the other hand there is a sense that Gilbert prefers for things to remain the same or for the status quo to remain unchanged.

Ancient Egypt Legacy
Though she is only briefly mentioned in the story the introduction of Lady Lovegrove may also have some symbolic significance. The reader is aware that Lady Lovegrove (or Lady L.) asks Angela ‘Did I realise my responsibility…as Gilbert’s wife.’ This line may be important as it suggests that Lady Lovegrove believes that it is a woman’s responsibility or duty to serve her husband. Which at the time would have been the predominant view within society as to what a woman’s role inside a marriage might be. It may also be a case that by introducing Lady L.’s question into the story Woolf is suggesting that a woman’s identity is intertwined with her husband’s identity with there being no room for a woman to have her own identity or to be her own person. Fun casino games to play at home. Spooky spins cheats. It is also interesting that at no stage in the story does the reader sense that Gilbert considers Angela’s charity work to be of any significance, which may suggest a lack of equality within Angela and Gilbert’s marriage. While Angela has always been by Gilbert’s side and supported him in all his endeavours the same is not true for Gilbert when it comes to him supporting Angela.
It is also possible that by considering Angela’s work to be no more than part of ‘some committee’ Woolf is highlighting how men in general at the time would have viewed their wives role in society. If anything there is a sense that Gilbert (or society) believes that any input a woman may have with regards to their efforts outside marriage may not necessarily be considered important. Many critics also believe that by including the line ‘Egypt, Egypt, Egypt’ into the story Woolf is drawing on Exodus and just as the Israelite’s were enslaved in Egypt, Woolf may also be suggesting that Angela too may have felt enslaved or trapped within her marriage to Gilbert. The fact that Gilbert also disliked the clothes that Angela wore while she was doing her charity work may also be symbolically important as Woolf could be suggesting that not only had Angela begun to change how she lived her own life but she may also be highlighting the fact that Angela was beginning to understand how different her life was from those that she met while working at the charity. Unlike Gilbert who as mentioned lacks any ability to be able to connect with others, particularly those who may be less fortunate than him.
The end of the story is interesting as Woolf appears to be not only exploring the theme of awareness but continues to explore the theme of change. It is only after Gilbert has spoken to Sissy that he becomes fully aware of not only who B.M. is but also what B.M.’s relationship with Angela really was. No longer is he as ignorant about the truth as he had previously been. However there is no sense that things will change for Gilbert rather how he lives his life, thinking of himself only, may be how he continues to live. The reader does not suspect that Angela’s death will force Gilbert to reflect on his own life and to re-evaluate how he thinks. Woolf’s use of the word ‘escape’ in the final sentence of the story may also be important as it again suggests that Angela may have felt trapped inside her marriage to Gilbert. Which may be the point that Woolf is trying to make. It is possible that Woolf is suggesting that for many women, again at the time the story was written, rather than feeling any sense of equality within their marriages found themselves instead locked within the marriage with very little or no freedom to explore their own identity. Rather than being viewed upon as independent of their husbands or to have any of their efforts outside the marriage taken seriously by their husbands many women may have been considered to be no more than an extension of their husband and as Lady L. suggested had a responsibility to their husbands.

Imagine, how hard it would be if in this world nothing existed, and we would have been the ones to invent and create everything from scratch? There are many civilizations in history that contributed to the rise of modern-day society. The Ancient Egyptian was one of the most successful civilizations in the Ancient World that invented so many things for humanity. Ancient Egypt is an essential part of the development of future civilizations and the modern World today. Egypt has left many legacies that leave an impact on our modern daily lives. All of the things that we see today have been in some way shape or form improved upon to stand the test of time. The ancient Egyptians were the masters of inventors and they invented so many things. We would be lost without the inventors that they created, and if we did not use those inventions our life would have been different from it is today. Paper and writing, Pyramid, and medicine are one of the three artifacts legacies that left by Ancient Egypt civilization.

One the most important legacy that left by Ancient Egyptians is paper and writing. The ancient Egyptians were the ones who created the paper and writing for the first time in the history, which give daily to helping our world functions. Firstly, Ancient Egyptians created a kind of paper called Papyrus. For example, Papyrus was a type of paper which made from the river plant invented, “Papyrus was a very strong and durable paper-like material that was used in Egypt for over 3000 years. It is the precursor to modern paper, the name of which is derived from the word “papyrus.” Documents written on papyrus were often sealed with a mud sealing embossed with a stamp from a scarab seal, much in the same way that wax seals were later used”[1]. Papyrus had a positive impact on the ancient Egyptians. At first, Papyrus was only used in Egypt, but by the 1000 BC, people all over West Asia started buying the Papyrus from Egypt and using it. The Greeks and Romans also used to buy a lot of Papyrus. But it was expensive, one sheet of papyrus probably cost about $20 worth today. Later on, the Islamic empires learned how to make paper. Since that time paper affected people’s life positively. People have been using it for their daily basis like writing books, sending letters, and using it for education purposes. Paper is one of the greatest legacies of ancient Egypt that we use it daily today. If there were not any paper, we would not have any track of the ancient people, pious people, and history. If the paper did not exist today, we would have to remember everything that everyone would tell us. Secondly, Egyptians invented hieroglyphs which were drawing of familiar objects. Egyptians needed government officials to run things; they needed to records things for trading with other countries. They started drawing of a sheep or a cow or a dog. For instance, “some early writing is just a picture of a sheep with five lines by it to mean “five sheep.” That was good enough for collecting taxes, but not for anything more complicated. So people began to combine pictures, so that a picture of a sheep means the sound “sh” and can be combined with a picture of an owl “hoot” to mean the word “shoot,”.[2] It was very time consuming and too hard for Egyptians to learn and draw. Then they invented Hieratic, which this system of writing was quick and used along hieroglyphs for most of Egyptian history. This system of writing had a huge impact on the Ancient Egypt civilization. They were used to communicate to each other which were necessitated by trade. It affected them positively. Since then, people started communicating each other and recording the history by writing. Ancient Egyptians left as a great legacy which is writing. Today, without writing life would have been very hard for people. Thus, paper and writing are the greatest legacies that left from Ancient Egypt civilization.

The second legacy that left by Ancient Egypt civilization is the Pyramids. The pyramids are the oldest of the seven wonders of Ancient World that survives today. The ancient Egyptians built Pyramids as tombs for Pharaohs and their Queens. As part of their religion, the Egyptians believed that the pharaoh needed certain things to be succeeded in the afterlife. Deep inside the Pyramid, the Pharaoh would be buried with all the wealth and treasure that he may need it the afterlife. According to ancient.eu website, “From the top point of the pyramid, it was thought, the soul would travel to the after-life of the Field of Reeds and, if it so chose, could easily return to earth (the high pinnacle of the pyramid, or a life-like statue of the king, serving as a beacon the soul would recognize)”.[1] This caused Egyptians to build the Pyramids. It affected hundreds of Egyptians live negatively. Some people say that slaves built the pyramids; however, according to the Quatr. Us, “The people who built the Pyramids were not slaves, because who could afford to feed so many slaves? They were almost certainly farmers, who worked on the Pyramids during the winter, when there wasn’t much to do on their farms, as a kind of tax”.[2] Building of Pyramids had a major effect on the daily lives of Egyptians for a long period of time. Hundreds of people had lost their lives while building the Pyramids. Egyptians built tens of pyramids. It took them years to build the pyramids, the search of life website writes that “This massive construction, which took approximately 30 years to complete, was not only an astonishing feat of engineering but also required the transportation of tons of materials and the effective organization of an estimated 100,000 men”.[3] They have built about tens of pyramids which the three best and huge ones built for the Pharaoh Khufu. The largest is the pyramid of the Giza. When it was built it was over 480 feet tall, it was the tallest man-made structure for over 3800 years. They have built the Pyramids to protect the pharaohs’ tombs. Today, the pyramids are existed in Egypt and are among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Annually, hundreds of tourists visit the Pyramids. It reminds people of the Ancient World. Thus, Ancient Egyptians left the greatest Pyramids behind as their legacy for the modern World.

The third greatest legacy that left by Ancient Egyptian is the medicine. Ancient Egypt was one of the ancient countries which made the medicine. In Egypt, medicine was mixed with magic. There was no sharp line between medicine and religion. The Disease was often believed as a punishment from God. According to ancient.eu “The cause of disease was usually understood as the consequence of sin and, when that seemed not the case, that the patient was under a demonic attack, was being plagued by an angry ghost, or that some god felt they needed to learn a lesson. Disease, therefore, was commonly treated through recitation by a doctor of magical spells”.[1] Treatment involved attempts to satisfy them with ritual chanting or sacrifice, though this was often merged with direct treatment of the ill person. The Egyptians relied on several Gods for their health. In ancient Egypt, the treatment of illness no longer done only by magician, but by the medicine too. Ancient Egypt was very medically advanced that even people from other counties would come for treatment from a very long distance. Egyptians were so skilled and talented in treating people. The ancient Egyptians created many different types of herbs and remedies. Ancient Papyrus tells us today that ancient Egyptians were discovering more about the human body and they knew about the heart, rates, blood was very important to the human body. A Papyrus Ebers written by an ancient Egyptians “46 vessels go from the heart to every limb, if a doctor places his hand or fingers on the back of the head, hands, stomach, arms or feet then he hears the heart. The heart speaks out of every limb.”[2] This shows that Egyptians started the concept of doctors and remedies. It also, shows that they knew what parts of the body were important and they had a bit of knowledge of how to treat it. Today, many of medical Papyrus from ancient Egypt exist that shows Egyptians were the ones who started making medicine and they had the knowledge of treating people. Medicine had an essential impact on the lives of Egyptians. Most of the people were treated by the priests or doctors. Medicine influenced not only the Egyptians’ lives but also other people’s lives in the Globe. Inventing of the medicine was a historical significance in the history of civilization. This is one of the greatest legacies of the Ancient Egyptians left behind. Today, thousands of people are going to the doctor for treatment and are using medicine to get well soon. Imagine what would happen if there were not any doctor or medicine in the world? Our life would have been very different without the medicine. We would have lost thousands of lives due to the lack of medicine. Thus, medicine is one of the superior legacies of Ancient Egypt that left for us.

In conclusion, the invention of medicine, the building of Pyramids, and inventing of the paper and writing are one of the three legacies that left by ancient Egyptians. The Ancient Egyptians have contributed drastically to our modern day life. It is impossible to ignore the impact they have on our daily life. They were ones who established and invented so many things which are still used in our daily lives. Life would have been very different and very difficult without these inventions. What would happen if the paper were not existing today? Imagine if no one knew how to write? What would happen if there were not any treatment?
